Melissa practices throughout Ontario and has successfully defended cases ranging from Murder, Firearms, “Guns and Gangs” project cases, Robbery, Weapons, Criminal Organization, large-scale Fraud charges to Sexual Assaults, Domestic Assaults, Impaired Driving, and property related offences. In addition to criminal litigation, Melissa routinely represents lawyers before the Law Society of Ontario as well as other professionals in disciplinary proceedings and corporate entities defend against various regulatory offences (Ontario Health and Safety Act; the Ontario Fire Code; Tobacco and Vaping Products Act; and various Environmental / Wild Animal and Plant Protection Regulations etc.).

Over the last several years, Melissa has acted as a mentor; has provided keynote addresses to schools and labour union organizations and has presented at conferences. Melissa has worked along-side Judges and Crown Attorneys to co-author Ontario Bar Association reference materials on the topic of Collateral Consequences of Criminal Convictions as well as co-authoring continuing legal education materials for the Law Society of Ontario.

Melissa is fluent in Portuguese (conversant in Spanish) and is a proud member of the Portuguese Canadian Lawyers Association (PCLA); the Federation of Portuguese Canadian Business and Professionals (FPCBP); the Criminal Lawyers Association (CLA); and, the Ontario Bar Association (OBA).

Melissa received her L.L.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School while having completed the Cornell Law School International and Comparative Law Program at the Université Sorbonne in Paris, France in Comparative Corporate Law and International Commercial Arbitration. During her time in law school, Melissa was fortunate to work alongside Alan Young in the gathering of foundational materials aimed at the decriminalization of prostitution and cannabis laws. Following her graduation from law school, Melissa articled and practiced exclusively with Heller, Rubel.

Melissa obtained her Honours Bachelor of Arts in Criminology at the University of Toronto.
